SWARPAnet user policies

Our goals is to have a small number of easy-to-follow policies for users, in the interest of ensuring that you can do what you want to do, our administration task is as easy as possible, and no one goes to jail.

E-mail reachability policy

We require that every user who has a SWARPAnet login account be reachable via e-mail at username@swarpa.net. This is for our benefit and for yours, so that we can track down users quickly in case of maintenance emergency, or just to keep you up-to-date on what's happening at SWARPAnet. We are not going to abuse your address or sell it to anyone. In order for this to work, you need to either:

  1. Use your swarpa.net (or infersys.com keyfitz.org, swil.org, etc) address as a primary address, i.e. check it occasionally, by logging in or via POP, IMAP, or Webmail.
  2. Provide us with an address which you actually read, to which we can forward your swarpa.net address. If this address changes, provide us with the new address so that we can update your alias.

You may switch back and forth between these options at will by letting us know. It's also fine if you want to use a .forward file on a temporary basis (for instance, to forward your mail elsewhere while you're on vacation), but, if you want to stop using your SWARPAnet address as a primary address, you should let us know.

Policy on bad things

We run SWARPAnet because we enjoy doing so. If our users do bad things, it makes us much less happy. We like being happy. Therefore, if you do bad things, we will not allow you continue to be a user. Sending spam from a SWARPAnet machine would be bad. Using a SWARPAnet machine to try to break into another machine, also pretty bad. Filling /var to see whether anything interesting will happen, yup, bad. Use your judgment here, and, if you are unsure about whether something would be bad, ask us.
